LOCAL TOUR: HALF-DAY
Walking by yourself
We like to encourage you to discover the Oasis by yourself, on foot. Please
contact reception for directions.
The most popular walk, especially pleasant at sunset, is to the Black Mountain
and the Englishman's House. It takes approximately 45 minutes to reach the top
of the Black Mountain, so named after its black basalt stones.
You might also like to walk through the palm groves, which start just behind
the hotel. Here you will meet local Oasians riding donkeys to their gardens.
The local people are very friendly and hospitable.
On request and for just a small fee, one of our 'silent guides' will accompany
you and show you their favourite spots. This will relieve you of any anxiety
about getting lost or handling the local children, who are occasionally
persistent.
Recommendation: For travellers who have time for new experiences.
When you visit the oases of the Western Desert, please respect the local dress
code, especially while walking by yourself:
- Women:
- Please wear a shirt with long sleeves, and wear long trousers that cover
your ankles.
- If you cover your hair with a scarf, your politeness will be appreciated.
- Men:
- o Please do not wear short trousers.
It is very safe to walk around the oasis as there is no criminality. As in any
small community, the people know each other by name, and are usually linked to
one another by family ties.
Recommendation: Children will approach you and beg you for a pen,
("Mumpkin alam [pen]?"), and some uneducated children will even ask
for "Backsheesh" [money], we recommend that you do not offer this
little gift, as it will raise expectations in the future. |
