Historical Information:
The limestone-stalactite Djara Cave was put on the map by the German
explorer Gerhard Rohlfs on 24 December 1873, during his famous expedition
recorded in his book Drei Monate in der Lybischen Wueste.
The cave was rediscovered in 1989 by the German adventurer Dr Carlo Bergmann,
who was also exploring the area by camel. Today it is classified by the German
Archaeological Institute as the second most important Stone-Age settlement in
the Western Desert after Nabqa Playa, which is located further south close to
the Darb al-Arbaein (Forty Days' Road).
Dr Rudolf Kuper of the Heinrich Barth Institut in Cologne recommends that the
cave be included as a World Heritage Site of the UNESCO, as is Wadi Hitan.
Djara Cave is close to the crossroads of the Darb Assiut, the caravan trail
connecting Farafra Oasis and Assiut, and the Abu Muharraq sand dune, at
approximately 1.500kms the longest dune in the Western Desert. It is 180kms
from both Bahariya and Farafra.
The cave itself is about 30m wide and 8m high, and contains animal engravings
dating back from the Neolithic Period. |
